Note: because this article is on the Web, email addresses have had some trivial but obvious spam protection applied. 1) The address for posting to the list is tolklang (at) quettar.org Note that all messages received via the list will have the Reply-To: field set to this address, so make sure to override this if you actually want to write personally to the originator. 2) The address for administrative matters is tolklang-request (at) quettar.org (but see also note (8)). 3) You should find in each message a header field beginning X-Message-Number: . This provides a short reference for the message. 4) Frequency of moderation. Normally, I shall deal with the list once a day, but occasionally I don't come in to the Department. I shan't bother to announce absences of three or four days, but if I'm going to be away longer, I'll let you know. If I'm going to be away for much more than a week, I'll switch to automated sending (and pray that nothing goes wrong...). (All these times are subject to increase if the volume is too low ...) 5) In order to get exemption from the (expensive) provisions of the UK's Data Protection Act, I have set up an "unincorporated members' club", for which the condition of membership is being on this list. I am required to ask all members of this club whether they object to personal data concerning them, to wit names and email addresses, being stored on a computer, or to the availability of that data to the other members of the "club". Silence implies consent in this case, so the formalities are satisfied if you do nothing. 6) You will receive fairly soon a digest of recent messages. Thereafter, you can retrieve past messages, and a lot of other useful or interesting information from the TolkLang archive. To find out how to retrieve items from the archive by mail, send a message with a Subject of "help" (without the quotes!) to tolklang-server (at) quettar.org . If you are on the Internet, you can find the archive on the Web or by anonymous ftp. For Web access, use the URL http://tolklang.quettar.org/ and for FTP access, ftp to (currently unavailable). 7) PLEASE NOTE that I will not make any attempt to resend messages that fail to get to you owing to mail problems, unless the fault lies with me or with our mail system. You can see whether you have missed any messages by looking at the X-Message-Number headers: if you have missed some, use the archive server to get them sent again. 8) Most routine subscription matters can be dealt with by the mail server, on which you should receive help after this message. In particular, to change from normal subscription to digest subscription, or vice versa, send a message with the line resubscribe digest to change to digest, or resubscribe to change to normal, to tolklang-server (at) quettar.org and to leave the list, use unsubscribe and to suspend your membership temporarily (e.g. over the summer), use suspend. Please use the mail server where possible; I reserve the right to ignore any unsubscription requests to tolklang-request unless the mail server has failed to deal with them! JCB.
